Answers for your countertop questions
Granite is unique among natural stones in hardness, composition and origin. Geologically, granite is an igneous rock, meaning that it was formed from a molten state. Most marbles, limestone and travertine are significantly “softer” than granite. High in quartz and feldspar, granite is highly resistant to scratching and heat. In the industry, natural stone is designated as a granite versus a marble or limestone or quartzite based on industry (versus geologic) testing regarding durability characteristics. Because of its durability, granite is recommended for use in kitchens over other natural stones.
Engineered stone is a manmade product that is a combination of quartz, resin and colorants to mimic the look and performance of natural stone. We are a licensed fabricator and installer of the Caesarstone® Silestone, Zodiaq, and HanStone; all are lines of engineered stones. Depending on the style one desires, there are circumstances that engineered stone makes sense over natural stone. Ask your sales person for more information
In general, undermount sinks are the most popular sinks for the natural stone counters because it gives a very clean look. Farm sinks are also popular, but they must be installed before we can template your project. There are a few customers who prefer top mount sinks and you can get a larger sink since it sits on top of the stone. We will use the template provided by the sink manufacturer to cut the stone based on the customer’s final selection. One word of caution, the sink must fit inside your cabinet. Most cabinets can only hold an under mount sink up to 22 inches deep. You cannot install a 24-inch undermount sink in a 25-inch cabinet.
We know that the process can be overwhelming and we want everything to go as smooth as possible. That is why we have our own plumber ON STAFF. You will need a plumber to hook up your sink, vaucets and any other fixtures. We have our OWN on staff plumber who we will schedule to come out the day after install to complete.
First, templating is the process of making a pattern of the tops of your counter. They will be used when we cut your stone slabs into your new countertops. The time of template will depend on when your cabinets are installed and ready. If you have existing cabinets in place, then you are ready to go. If the cabinets are not yet installed, then we must wait until they are set in place before we can template your kitchen or bathroom area. Also, if you have chosen a farm sink then it too will need to be installed before this time.**You will need to be at the site during the template process. It is a good idea to remove all personal, and family cherished items from the countertop area to a safe area.**Templates are extremely important to the final quality of the project. It may take an hour or longer to complete your templates and to answer any questions that you may have. Templates will give you visual perception of the final product. Your designer and template specialist can offer design suggestions to accentuate certain areas.
Absolutely! We require that you approve of your natural stone selection before we cut. We will call you to schedule a day and time that works best. We aim to have the slab available and approved for your project two weeks before installation.We look for the quality and integrity of the slab and we would like you to approve the color of the stone. If you have a large project, it may take 3-4 slabs. We will insure they are from matching lots, but there may be some variation in color, markings, and shading. This is inherent in all natural stone. Some customers have their pictures taken in front of the large slabs before they are cut. We will be happy to assist!
Congratulations on your natural stone countertops. We are committed to meeting or exceeding your expectations for the installation of your countertops. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us. Natural Stone countertops are sealed in the shop and again at the time of installation (sealing will slow how fast things can be absorbed into the stone). This should be done six months after installation and then every year there after. The lighter the stone color, the more likely it could stain. Dark colors are very difficult to stain, or at least, less noticeable.
We supply each customer with a very thorough and easy to follow care & maintenance guide. The care of granite is very simple and doesn’t require a lot of time. The care for Quartz products is a bit different, but just as easy. Cleaning daily with a clean towel, warm water and mild soap is a great way to start.
